Why Ground Screws
Ground screws offer a clean, proven alternative to concrete for many garden building foundations. They're quick to install and well suited to Cornwall's sloping, wet and awkward gardens.
Ground screws create a level base without major digging.
Stable, draining foundations help avoid pooling and rot.
Most standard bases go in within a day.
See the system at work
The machine drives each screw into the ground with controlled torque, creating firm support points without excavating a full concrete slab.
Access, levels, ground conditions and the building footprint are checked before work begins.
Screws are positioned and levelled to suit the base, slope and finished floor height.
The treated timber frame can be built straight away, leaving a tidy, ventilated base.
Meet the person doing the work
Oliver founded Base & Build at 18 after spending time pouring concrete and seeing how much disruption a traditional base could leave behind.
Growing up in Cornwall, he understood why people trusted the familiar way of doing things — but he also saw a cleaner option. Ground screws make it possible to create solid, level bases without turning a customer's garden into a building site.
“I wanted to prove that a solid base doesn't have to mean a messy site. I survey and quote the work myself, then make sure the garden is left clean, level and ready for the building.”

Book a Garden Visit Quick WhatsAppMost ground screw bases are installed in a single day. A standard 3m × 3m shed base takes 3–5 hours. Larger garden room or cabin bases may take slightly longer, but we aim to finish everything in a single visit.
In most cases, no. Ground screw bases for standard garden buildings fall within permitted development rights. If you're in a conservation area or the structure is unusually large, different rules may apply. Oliver will advise during your free site survey.
Yes — ground screws are ideal for sloped and uneven ground, which is common across Cornwall. They can be installed at varying depths to create a perfectly level platform regardless of terrain. This is one of their biggest advantages over traditional concrete.
Yes. We offer a full supply and build service — we source sheds, summerhouses, garden rooms, timber studios, and log cabins at trade prices, then deliver and professionally assemble them on your new base.
Assembly time depends on size and complexity. A standard shed takes half a day. A summerhouse or log cabin typically takes 1–2 days. A timber garden studio may take 2–3 days. We'll give you a clear timeline in your quote.
Yes — we cover all of Cornwall including Truro, Falmouth, Newquay, St Austell, Penzance, Bodmin, Wadebridge, Helston, Camborne, and Redruth. If you're unsure, give Oliver a call on 07706 938211 or send a WhatsApp.
Standard ground screw bases start from £499. The final price depends on the footprint, number and specification of screws, access, levels and ground conditions. After the free site survey, you'll receive a clear written quote with the agreed work itemised.
Oliver checks access, the building footprint, slope and levels, ground conditions, drainage, the required finished floor height and your chosen building specification. He then explains the most practical approach and follows up with a written quote.
Often, yes — and keeping the timber frame clear of damp ground is a major advantage. The correct screw length and specification depend on the site, so Oliver assesses the ground before recommending or pricing the base.
Yes, dismantling and removal can often be included before the new base is installed. The exact scope, access and waste removal are agreed in the quote so you know what will be cleared and how the site will be left.
Bases are built with treated structural timber, galvanised fixings and ground screws selected for the building, spans and site conditions. The aim is a square, level, ventilated base designed to support the structure above it.
Yes. Plywood internal lining and tidy trim work can be added to garden rooms and timber buildings, leaving a clean, practical interior ready for decorating or fitting out. Tell Oliver the finish you want at the survey so it can be included in the quote.
